Healthy Meal Planning

TashaDavis

This year in Sargent Tash’s Wellness and Fitness class, one of the projects that we did was our Super Tracker meal planner.  By doing the meal planner, we were supposed to learn how to modify our diet in a “good way”.  That means that we should only have a certain amount of calories and the different amounts of different types of foods that we should have per meal.

By doing the meal planner, I was able to see what foods I was not getting enough of like, for example, green vegetables or whole grain bread.  I was also able to see what things I was getting too much of like sugars and fats.  After we found this out we were able to add healthy foods into our diets and to get rid of unnecessary fatty or sugary foods like pizza.

One of the first things we did in this project was catch up and remind ourselves what My Plate was and what a healthy meal included.  After that we were given homework that lasted from 10-08-13 to 10-09-13.  The homework was a food diary, and we were supposed to record every single, bitty thing that we ate at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and what we had for snacks on those two days.  A few days after that assignment, we were given a sheet with a link to a website called supertracker.com.  In part one, we made an account on Super Tracker and entered everything we ate on 10-8 and 10-9 into the Tracker.  Then we had to print out a separate report for each of the dates.  For part two, we had to create a healthy meal that we could eat and print it out.

This benefited my health by teaching me what I need to fix in my diet.  For example, I don’t eat enough fruits, vegetables, or whole grains.  Now that I have fixed my diet, I am not so tired anymore.  I have a lot more energy to do a lot more things and get better grades on my school work.

I used Inquiry in this project.  You see, I don't like fruits or vegetables so I had to try and ask my self what things I could possibly eat (and wasn't allergic to) even though I didn't want to.  I'm allergic to a lot of foods and on top of that, I'm a picky eater.  I had to catagorize my allergies and dislikes.  Then the foods that I didn't like into ones I REALLY hated and ones that I just didn't eat because I never ate them as a kid.  I think Inquiry is not only asking a question although that's a large part of it.  Inquiry is also caring enough to try and find an answer.
