Introducing the 5 Qualities
S.T.E.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
With S.T.E.M. education, you can see children talking and working problems together to try to help the student who has the wrong answer figure out why the answer is wrong and also figure out what the correct answer is. The students actually volunteer to take the risk and show the class his or her work and be willing to be wrong. The students are not forced to do worksheets for the whole day. Instead, they work on group projects and share their imagination.
The five qualities that Dayton Regional S.T.E.M. School uses are Persistence, Inquiry, Collaboration, Communication, and Creativity.
DRSS emphasizes these qualities instead of grades and tests because they don't just want you to memorize and recite what you learn. They also want you to understand it, enjoy it, and apply it to your own life.
At S.T.E.M., when the students revise over and over again, they are using Persistence because they keep trying to achieve better than their current best. You use Persistence to improve one skill and build on another. When students work together, they are using both Collaboration and Communication because they are sharing their ideas and imagination verbally with others. Students can also use Communication by talking to a teacher about their assignments. Students use Inquiry when they are curious or when they have a question. Whenever you think, you are using Inquiry. You can use Creativity when you use a strategy of your imagination and the resources you are given.
